Lane shifts on Interstate 80 eastbound in Mercer County begin today as part of a major reconstruction project.

The changes affect the stretch of I-80 from the Shenango River Bridge to the Route 318 Bridge, including the area around the Interstate 376 interchange. The lane shifts were originally scheduled to begin Friday, Sept. 26.

Westbound traffic will remain shifted, and one lane of eastbound traffic will move adjacent to the westbound lanes, as currently deployed. Eastbound drivers should use this lane.

The second eastbound lane will move from the inside lane to the outside lane and shoulder next to the work zone. Drivers planning to exit onto I-376 must use this lane.

The revised traffic pattern is expected to be in place for several months and is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) Interstate 80 Reconstruction Project.

The project includes major improvements to the highway from the Ohio state line to mile marker 5, such as milling, asphalt and concrete paving, concrete patching, drainage and guiderail upgrades, and new digital message boards.

Additionally, work involves repairs to five bridges, including the replacement and widening of the bridges over Route 318 in Shenango Township. Construction began in April 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2027.
