2000: Political and labor officials met in groups of 50 with Vice President Al Gore before he addressed crowds on Warren's Courthouse Square and at Youngstown State University. 

Thirteen of 18 buildings studied in downtown Youngstown appear to be unsalvageable. 

RTI International Metals, parent of RMI Titanium in Niles, is awarded a 10-year contract worth $100 million to supply titanium for howitzers to be built by a British defense contractor. 

 

1985: Architects find no structural damage from an arson fire at Salem High School, and the monetary loss is still undetermined, but damage to a grand piano is set at $30,000. Police have no leads. 

A fire in the chassis department at the General Motors Lordstown plant injured five workers, with two remaining hospitalized.

1975: A once-drab rear wall of three W. Market Street buildings in Warren is transformed into a brightly colored mural depicting a stylized chessboard. "Project Facelift" is sponsored by the Warren Jaycee-Ettes. 

Elmer C. Pacella is named administrator of Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital. 

Victor Borge, internationally renowned pianist, conductor, and musical comedian, opens the 79th Monday Musical concert season at Stambaugh Auditorium. 

 

1950: Youngstown City Council increases its offer for a weekly bus pass from $1.60 to $1.70  in a take-it-or-leave-it offer to the Youngstown Municipal Railway Co. 

Campbell school enrollment is 1,916 at the beginning of the year, a decrease from 2,001 a year earlier, says the superintendent. Andrew S. Klinko. 

Speaking in East Liverpool, U.S. Sen. Robert A. Taft says the United States must have adequate military defense, particularly in its air forces, but he does not think there will be a third world war.
