2000: A Vindicator/WFMJ pre-election poll shows U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., D-17th, is likely to be re-elected with 36 percent of the vote projected to go to him and 22 percent to his nearest challenger, Republican Paul Alberti. Randy Walter has 15 percent, and three others have between 1% and 7%. 

The Lordstown Board of Education, which faces a projected deficit of $1.2 million by June 30, votes 4-1 to request that the state declare the district in fiscal emergency. 

About 750 production workers at the Werner ladder company in Greenville, Pa., ratified a five-year contract that will add between $2 and $2.50 to their hourly wage of $13.

 

1985: Tommie "June" Lake is acquitted at trial in the murder of Ike Scott after defense attorneys move for dismissal because prosecutors never had a witness positively identify Lake as the shooter during a two-day trial. Mahoning Common Pleas Judge William Houser sustained the defense motion for an acquittal. 

U.S. District Judge Thomas Lambros finds four Youngstown-area men guilty of various charges in the deaths of nine people in the explosion of an illegal fireworks manufacturing plant in May in Beaver Township.  

A Champion Township couple will split the $3.3 million Ohio Lotto jackpot with an Ashtabula County woman.  Alan and Carol Ady will get $66,000 a year after taxes for 20 years. 

 

1975: A hard-fought campaign between Republican Mayor Arthur Richards and  Democratic challenger Robert H. Roberts III in Warren is expected to draw 20,000 voters to the polls, an 80 percent turnout. 

Gary T. Kutsko of Austintown, a 1968 graduate of Ursuline High School, received a Doctor of Dental Science degree from Ohio State University.

Youngstown State University Quarterback Cliff Stoudt backs into the end zone on a two-point play that gives the Penguins a 15-14 win over Eastern Michigan before 3,870 fans at Rayen Stadium. 

 

1950: Frank W. Mouery, president of the Central Store and one of Youngstown's leading civic and religious lay leaders, dies of a heart attack in Bethlehem, Pa. He was 67.

The possibility of bringing charges of nonfeasance in office against Mahoning Sheriff Paul Langley will be discussed by citizens of Wickliffe, site of a notorious gambling joint. 

Dr. Robert H. McKelvey, 45, shoots and kills his wife, Martha, 43, and then turns the gun on himself in their E. State Street, Salem, home.
