VERNON TWP, Ohio - Voters in Vernon Township within Mahoning County voted to pass an increased replacement levy for its fire and EMS services.

The issue was voted on during the November 4 general election ballot regarding the proposed 2.5 mill levy for fire and EMS, which would be in place for a continuing period of time until it is voted to be removed.

Final totals came out to 159 votes to pass the levy, and 106 votes not to. The levy passed with 60% of the votes in favor of its passage.

The township currently gets its EMS services from Johnson Township, with taxpayers paying for one half and the township paying for the other half out of the general fund.

The township agreed to continue receiving services from Johnson Township through 2026, but recognized the need for the increase since only half of the township includes taxable land that generate funds from levies.

For homes valued at $100,000, the levy would cost the taxpayer $88 a year.

With the replacement, increased levy passed, the township will be able to cover the full price of around $77,000 a year to continue to receive services.

Surplus funds generated by the levy are intended to go toward the fire department to get more equipment, such as thermal cameras, new jaws of life and new trucks later on.
