2000: Saint Francis Health System officials say 25 full-time positions have been eliminated at St. Francis Hospital in New Castle, but no further cuts are anticipated. 

Major League Baseball umpire Wally Bell is named an honoree-survivor by the Mahoning chapter of the American Heart Association after recovering from quadruple-bypass surgery. 

A worker at U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant's horse farm pleads guilty in U.S. District Court to charges of tampering with a grand jury witness.  Sentencing is set for Feb. 13. 

 

1985: Robert A. Garvey, president of North Star Steel and the main speaker at the 80th anniversary banquet of the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce, says the company's management style will combine high technology and open labor policies. 

Frank Kenley's Warren Star Theater will return to Warren for four alternating weeks in 1986. He's trying to sign Robert Goulet, Daniel O'Connor, Frankie Layne, and Mitzi Gaynor. 

Judge Nathaniel Jones of the U.S. 6 th Court of Appeals returns to Youngstown for a reunion of Youngstown State University law and criminal justice graduates. In an address, he talks about his visit to South Africa and says unchecked brutality by police aggravates the country's troubles. 

 

1975: A 16-year-old Ravenna youth is sentenced to life in prison for the murder on July 5 of Judy Riggenbach, 18, a nurse's aide at Robinson Memorial Hospital. 

The Rev. John Roach, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Vienna, will speak at a community Thanksgiving service at Mathews High School. 

Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus (Ray King and Eleanor Scannell) arrive in downtown Youngstown in a sleigh atop a gigantic float at the end of the traditional Christmas parade. Canfield, East, Chaney, Mooney, Fitch, Girard, North , and South high school bands marched. 

 

1950: Boardman Township's 1.5-mill levy that will provide $45,000 a year for roads, sewers, fire, and police departments is approved by a one-vote margin after three "no" votes were disallowed during a recount. 

Traffic Capt. William Cleary says alcohol, speed, and carelessness have contributed to an alarming increase in traffic fatalities in Youngstown, which stand at 19 so far this year. 

August Yahn, a former Youngstown College standout, is continuing his football career at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
