A crucial pass interception in the last two minutes of an NCAA 1-AA playoff game gives the University of Richmond a 10-3 victory over the Youngstown State University Penguins before 5,000 wet and cold fans. 

After nearly four decades of chasing bad guys and 17 years as sheriff of Columbiana County, Richard Koffel is retiring at the end of the year. 

 

1985: On the eleventh day of a strike by meatcutters and retail clerks, the Tamarkin Co. announces it is closing three Valu King stores, in Howland, Boardman, and New Castle, and a Giant Eagle in Hermitage. 

Mayor Patrick Ungaro says he will seek estimates for removing part of Federal Plaza to allow two-way traffic through much of downtown Youngstown. 

Trumbull County Clerk of Courts Violet C. Whitman will lay off 23 employees and curtail operations for two weeks after a court ruling denied her an additional $12,414 to meet the year's final payroll. 

 

1975: A Mahoning County grand jury says Sheriff Ray T. Davis should be held in contempt for ignoring court rules in the operation of the county Jail. 

Youngstown school teachers may spank an unruly student, but they must first give him a chance to tell his side of the story, according to a U.S. District Court ruling. 

Youngstown has two first-team picks on the Mid-America all-conference squad: Sherman Smith of Miami, formerly of North High, and Ed Madison of Ohio University, formerly of South High.
