2000: The owners of Lane Funeral Homes and Lane Ambulance Services pledge $500,000 to build a new sports center for Mineral Ridge schools. 

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr.'s chief of staff, Paul Marcone, says, "He was fun to work for," but it's time to move on to a job as vice president at Russ Reid, a communications and marketing company in Washington.

Youngstown State University trustees are considering a proposal to cut tuition from $1,997 to $1,897 per semester for full-time students.

 

1985: Four leaders of the Catholic Church, including Youngstown Bishop James Malone, who is president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, hold a press conference at the Vatican praising a two week synod of church leaders for its accomplishments, but offer little encouragement to Catholics who want to see divorced Catholics welcomed into full participation in the church,  married men as priests or women priests anytime in the near future.  

A precinct breakdown shows that Columbian County voters of all backgrounds helped repeal the 1 percent sales tax on the November ballot. 

Donald R. Dedow, general manufacturing manager of the Packard Electric Division of General Motors, is elected president of the Manufacturers Association of Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. 

 

1975: Real property tax exemptions have increased by 58 percent in Mahoning County between 1965 and 1975, the Ohio Public Expenditure Council reports. Tax-exempt property in the county totals $102 million. 

Nursing home beds in Columbiana County outnumber hospital beds, 726 to 507, according to the Mahoning Valley Health Planning Association.

Figures from the Trumbull County auditor's office and treasurer's office compiled by The Vindicator indicate that county residents could pay as much as $3.6 million more in property taxes in the coming year due to re-evaluation of property values. 

 

1950: Esther Hamilton's annual Santa Claus Club fundraiser at Stambaugh Auditorium is scheduled for Dec. 2, and city officers say they will do their best to clear snow from the streets around the auditorium. 

Mayor Charles P. Henderson warns property owners that they are expected to comply with a city ordinance requiring the removal of snow from sidewalks. Fines could reach $150.

President Truman says consideration is being given to using nuclear weapons against the Chinese Communists if it becomes necessary. He also says he hopes the Korean War will not escalate into a third world war.
