YOUNGSTOWN - The Mahoning County Daughters (DAR) of the American Revolution donated $10,000 to a veteran shelter in Youngstown.

The Mahoning County DAR presented a $10,000 check to Veteran's Haven, with the funds generated from DAR's annual charity golf outing.

The funds will be used to support Veteran's Haven's Youngstown shelter, which is expected to open in 2026 to house homless veterans. The shelter will be located at the corner of Hillman Street and West Warren Avenue in Youngstown.

Half of the donation will go to adopt a bedroom for homeless veterans, and the other half will go to the shelter's pantry.

"Our program will be able to assist 14 veterans at a time. And because Veteran's Haven is a transitional housing program, that means that there's going to be a constant rotation. And unfortunately, not only in the Valley are veterans our most critical population, but it is a critical population across the nation as well," said Axess Family Services Assistant Director of Veteran Services Brandi Parker.

Parker says construction on the upcoming shelter has been ongoing daily since October, and she hopes the shelter can open by the spring of 2026.
