YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mahoning County does not have to pay taxes on the Oakhill Renaissance Building for the years the county has owned it.

At Thursday's Commissioner's meeting county officials announced that the tax department has given the building tax exempt status for 2007 through 2010. The property will also remain tax exempt moving forward.

But Mahoning County still owes more than half-a-million dollars in back taxes on the property from the years before it was acquired by the county.

It's something county officials say they'll continue to fight.

"That's still an issue that we would like to say to our government, petition our government," says Mahoning County Administrator George Tablack. "Please recognize this is a community with limited resources. Please treat us in a similar fashion to the legislation that was crafted to assist Columbus and Franklin county, and the building known as the Lazarus building."
