Rock slide shuts down Route 7
WELLSVILLE, Ohio - A rock slide has shut down Route 7 just south of Wellsville.
Just after 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday a motorist reported a large rock had fallen onto the southbound lanes, then minutes later tons of dirt, rocks and trees crashed down, covering most of the four lanes.
The Ohio Departmen ot Transportation mmediately shut down Route 7 for all traffic in that area.
Debris was still falling two hours later. Some rocks were over four feet in diameter. "Basically the reason this happens is because of the freeze thaw cycle and with all the moisture in the ground that's what starts these landfalls. No injuries, no cars were affected. People will be hampered with the detour. Definitely the public will have some travel concerns, but we'll do what we have to do to maintain public safety," said Tom Corey from ODOT.
ODOT officials say they can't clean up the rock slide until they are sure nothing else will come crashing down. They have no idea when that will be so the road will be closed until further notice.
