HERMITAGE, Pennsylvania – A quick response by Hermitage firefighters extinguished a blaze at the Joy Cone factory Monday night.

The fire began just before 8:00 p.m. in the scrap system of the cake cone line.

Firefighters doused the equipment from the roof, washing out the dust. It was quickly extinguished by Hermitage firefighters without damage to the plant.

Two other areas of the plant are still operating.

"When we make cake cones, there's cone scrap from each cone. It is trimmed off, sent through a dust collector scrap system and somewhere in that area, in the dust collector, some cone scrap caught fire," said David George, Joy Cone President.

The midnight shift was canceled, but the owner expects to be operating again on Tuesday after the mess is cleaned up.

Joy Cone is the largest ice cream cone manufacturer in the United States.
