Lawrence County officers train to keep students safe

Classes haven't even begun yet and a 17-year old in Florida is in jail for plotting to blow up a high school. Police found pipe bomb materials in Jared Cano's home and a journal expressing his desire to cause more casualties than the Columbine massacre.
Meanwhile, at Shenango High School the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team, the Shenango Township Police Department and several other officers from throughout Lawrence County train for what to do if there was an active shooter inside a school.
Shenango Police Chief William Phillips explains, "What they're doing is practicing different techniques and tactics to find the suspect as quickly as possible."
Chief Phillips says the shootings at Columbine changed the way officers handle school threats. "This training that we're going through today, I believe has been taught to officers over the last ten years. But it's ever revolving and they can be conducted anywhere from one officer to teams of officers."
The surveillance cameras inside and outside of Shenango High are also helpful to officers.
"The command post that we have set up today can tap into those cameras so we have real time intelligence. We can even tap into those cameras from our patrol vehicles or monitor them from our station."
