PITTSBURGH (AP) - The U.S. Postal Service is honoring the late Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Willie Stargell with his own postage stamp.

WECT-TV in Wilmington, N.C. got the OK from the Postal Service to report the new stamp on Wednesday, a day before it was officially announced. Stargell lived in Wilmington until he died in 2001 and his wife's twin sister works at the station.

Stargell's stamp is 1 of 4 to recently feature Hall of Famers. Stamps honoring New York Yankees star Joe DiMaggio and Larry Doby, the first black player in the American League, are already out. A fourth stamp featuring a yet-to-be announced player will come out with Stargell's next year.

Stargell's wife Margaret Weller-Stargell says he "would be humbled by this extraordinary honor."

Stargell hit 475 home runs while playing for the Pirates from 1962 to 1982.
