Owner of Do-Cut Tru-Value Hardware in Canfield says he will rebuild
CANFIELD, Ohio - A massive fire that started at about 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday caused extensive damage at the Do-Cut Tru-Value Hardware store on Raccoon Road in Canfield.
Don Hutchison, the chief of Canfield's Joint Fire District, says it's a total loss with damage estimates that could add up to approximately two million dollars. That estimate includes the structure itself and the entire contents of the store.
Firefighters who first arrived on the scene say the entire roof of the business was engulfed with smoke, and fire departments from several neighboring communities provided mutual aid to help get the fire under control.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol closed a portion of Route 224, Route 11, and Raccoon Road to traffic, so fire hoses could tap every available water source. Chief Hutchison says, "We had to have enough flow to try and keep the fire contained and put the fire out. So we had to use water systems that come from Boardman, and water systems that come from Canfield. So we actually laid line over the Route 11 bridge, and across Route 224."
Fire departments from at least three neighboring communities provided mutual aid and worked feverishly for at least two hours to get the fire under control. HAZMAT was also called in as a precaution to monitor air quality but there was no threat to the community.
Do-Cut owner, Dante Terzigni and his wife could only stand and watch in disbelief. Terzigni, who also owns a Do-Cut store in Warren says, "We have a tremendous faith in our family, our co-workers, our community. We've been here for years, we'll rebound from this. It's difficult right now, we're devastated."
Terzigni says this was his most profitable year ever and he will rebuild his business that's been a part of the community for decades.
As the state fire marshal works to determine the exact cause, Terzigni wants his customers to know that they can direct any questions to the Warren Do-Cut store on Youngstown Road and they can purchase any items they need at that store while he is in the process of rebuilding.
