CANFIELD, Ohio- Learning a new trade could lead to job opportunities with fracking.

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is re-launching its welding program, because of growing demand for experienced workers.

"The welding is probably the biggest part of it with all of the pipe they're going to put together and things that they're going to run the gas through once they get through it," said career center instructor Marc Silverstri.

The program offered to adults and high school students includes hands-on training for a variety of ways to weld. Measuring and fitting pipes puts an emphasis on math skills while learning the trade.

Silverstri said the center anticipates the Shale Boom's impact on the welding industry will have longevity.

"It's definitely not going to go away anytime soon, so there's definitley going to be a demand for welders," Silversti said.

Silverstri said students leave the program with an entry-level position status.
