Mahoning County Sheriff opens entire main jail for first time since 2010

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - It's been nearly three years since prisoners were released early, deputies laid-off, and half of the Mahoning County Jail was shut down.
Now, for the first time since 2010, the entire main jail is open.
The new sheriff has implemented about a half-a-dozen new fees to make it possible to hire seven new deputies and fully reopen the lock-up.
"I think it has a major impact. I spoke with Chief Foley and some chiefs in the area and they're delighted that we have the ability to hold additional inmates because otherwise they would be arrested and kicked back out on the streets right away. So I believe it's really going to help reduce crime," said Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene.
The new programs instituted under Sheriff Greene's administration so far will raise approximately $400,000 annually.
