STRUTHERS, Ohio - A man sent to prison for a notorious mob murder is now implicated in an alleged multi-million dollar drug ring.

40-year old George Wilkins the Third was convicted for his role in the ambush killing of local mob figure Ernie Biondillo Jr in June of 1996.

After serving his time, Wilkins was released on probation. But authorities began tracking Wilkins activities when his name came up during a drug investigation.

Struthers Police Chief Tim Roddy says agents received information that Wilkins made a drug pickup on Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania.

Wilkins was heading back to his home in Struthers when police stopped him for a traffic violation on State Street. Officers say when Wilkins refused to leave his vehicle, they smashed a window and pulled him out.

Inside the vehicle, officers found a gift bag containing a box. Inside the box investigators discovered three kilos of cocaine and a one and a half kilograms of heroin.

Chief Roddy says the drugs had a street value of more than one-million dollars. "He was cooperating with the task force which led to a supplier in New York City and a distributor in Pittsburgh." said Roddy.

Task Force leaders believe the three-state operation was supplying millions of dollars of drugs to the Pittsburgh and Youngstown areas.

"The vast majority would have been distributed here in Youngstown and eventually sold to residents of the city of Youngstown and residents of surrounding communities." said Drug Task Force Investigator Bob Patton.

The Mahoning County Grand Jury has handed up a five count indictment, charging Wilkins with possessing heroin, cocaine, and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.
