MASSILLON, Ohio (AP) - A crumbling former state mental institution in northeast Ohio won't be used as a haunted house as planned this Halloween because it's not safe for the public.

A company had petitioned city leaders in Massillon for use of McKinley Hall's auditorium for a commercial haunted house this fall. But The (Massillon) Independent reports that the city has ruled that the imposing structure is not safe.

City Safety-Service Director Al Hennon says the effort fell through mainly because the production company didn't follow through with a schedule to fix up the hospital's auditorium.

McKinley Hall, which opened in 1898, was the one of the first state hospitals in the United States. Many believe the now-empty building to be haunted.
