WARREN, Ohio - A flame from one of fifteen oil lamps that are said to have been burning in Bethlehem for more than one thousand years is now in Warren.

Joe Redding brought the “Peace Light” from New York City to the Boy Scouts of America headquarters Friday afternoon.

Now in its 28th year, the Peace Light from Bethlehem campaign was originally organized as part of a large charitable relief mission for children in need in Austria and abroad. Now the light is distributed throughout the world.

Last month, a 9-year-old student from Austria lit his lamp from one of the eternal flames. His lamp was used to light two blast proof miners lamps which were flown from Israel to Vienna Austria where the light is maintained for distribution.

This is the fourth consecutive year the Greater Western Reserve Council has brought the Peace Light flame to northeast Ohio. Scouts, Scouters and friends will pass the light on to others in their communities.

The Peace Light will be available until 12:00 noon on December 23rd at the Scouting headquarters at 4930 Enterprise Blvd., Northwest. The headquarters is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m., until 5:00 p.m., Thursday from 8:30 a.m., until 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m., until 2:00 p.m.

The JMJ Spiritual Connection II store located at 3408 Canfield Rd. in Youngstown, OH (Cornersburg) will also host the Peace Light for distribution to the public during their normal business hours, Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m., until 7:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m., until 7:00 p.m., beginning December 13 through Christmas Eve.

People may bring their own candles or lanterns to receive the flame, or JMJ has on hand supplies that can be purchased at the store for the safe transport of the flame.

The light will next be transported to St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Parma, Ohio
