YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A Struthers man convicted of a notorious mob murder is going back to prison for his part in a multi-million dollar drug ring.
Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Maureen Sweeney sentenced 41-year-old George Wilkins the Third to 12 years in prison on Monday.
Wilkins was convicted of cocaine and heroin possession, as well as engaging in corrupt activity.
Wilkins had been previously sentenced to more than thirteen years in prison for his role in the ambush killing of local mob figure Ernie Biondillo Jr in June of 1996.
After serving his time, Wilkins was released on probation. But authorities began tracking Wilkins activities when his name came up during a drug investigation.
Struthers Police Chief Tim Roddy said at the time of the arrest, that agents received information that Wilkins made a drug pickup on Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania.
Wilkins was heading back to his home in Struthers when police stopped him for a traffic violation on State Street. Officers say when Wilkins refused to leave his vehicle, they smashed a window and pulled him out.
Inside the vehicle, officers found a gift bag containing a box. Inside the box investigators discovered three kilos of cocaine and a one and a half kilograms of heroin.
Chief Roddy says the drugs had a street value of more than one-million dollars.
Task Force leaders believe the three-state operation was supplying millions of dollars of drugs to the Pittsburgh and Youngstown areas.
