A major fire broke out Thursday afternoon, destroying a Youngstown business.

It happened at Asphalt Solutions on the 700 block of Market Street, near the intersection of Interstate 680 just after 1:30 pm.

People could see the smoke billowing out of the building for miles around. One of the owners says he was in an office when a neighbor who worked there yelled out that there was smoke and fire inside the building.

Co-owner, Bob Roth went into the building through a back door. "I opened the door and smoke came blowing out. I said let's trying getting some equipment out of here. I got one truck out then it was too bad we had to get the hell out of there,” said Roth.

About two minutes later, nearly the entire building had been engulfed. As the fire burned small explosions could be heard, one after another. The owner says there were 13 different vehicles inside causing the explosions. two propane tanks were also inside the structure.

Three large ladder trucks could be seen dousing the structure with water as those explosions continued.

There were also some very tense moments as firefighter Gene Cook had to be dragged out of the burning building as the roof was ready to cave in. He was sent to the hospital to check for a concussion.

Youngstown fire chief, John O'Neill, says, "I had a couple guys that were working inside. We had a good angle on it. But we had a couple guys watching the roof at the same time but then it just got too tight. I told them the had to come out and it had to be now."

Fire quickly spread to an adjacent vacant home and destroyed that structure. Across the street debris from the burning roof fell and caught dry brush on fire. No injuries were reported.

Owners believe the fire caused about one million dollars in damages. They say they are insured and will look to relocate their business as soon as they can. Co-owner, Justin Bishops says "That's just the means of doing it. We know how to do it. It's just building it up again and come back stronger that's all."

The company employs about 20 people. A cause hasn't been determined as of yet.
