Giant Eagle has posted an official notification that it is shutting down the Tamarkin distribution warehouse in Austintown.

A notice filed with the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services says that 196 people would be out of work when the facility at 375 Victoria Road shuts down.

The so-called WARN notice is required under law by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

Giant Eagle said in the notice filed on March 11 that 164 drivers, maintenance and warehouse workers will lose their jobs.

In addition, 16 staff members and 16 members of management are also out of a job.

The notice says that Giant Eagle planned to close the plant on May 9, but according to our print partner, The Vindicator, a recently ratified severance package will allow the facility to remain open through June and 40 union jobs will be retained.

According to the union, the company said last year that it would build a new $35 million building if the union would approve a new five year agreement that included work rule changes, a lower pay scale for new workers, and an end to participation in the Teamster pension fund.

Workers rejected what Tamarkin said was its final offer last December.

Giant Eagle said that the final offer rejected by the union would have increased wages, maintained health benefits and added a 401K plan.
