A bat boy, 9, for a Wichita, Kansas baseball team died after he was accidentally hit in the head by a bat over the weekend.

Kaiser Carlile was on the field during a game, picking up a bat from a player who had just struck out.
Carlile was hit in the head as another player took practice swings.

He was wearing a helmet, but it wasn't enough to protect his head from the impact. He died Sunday night.

Jim Parks was at the game and witnessed the tragedy. "The bat boy retrieved the bat and he just ran right by him, he was swinging and it hit him in the helmet, knocked him down, he got back up but went right back down again and everybody came out and helped him," says Parks.

So what's being done on the local level to make sure tragedies like this never happen again? Scrappers management says there are policies in place.
first of all they say a nine year old is probably way too young to be out on the field.

Scrappers General Manager, Jordan Taylor, says, "Most of our bat boys range from 16-18 years old. What we do once they are hired they go through a training process as far as safety and be aware of what's going on during a game. We make sure they are always paying attention and are alert as possible because things can happen quickly at a baseball game."

Taylor says everyone needs to be on alert during game play.  "There's always risk of foul balls and bats coming into the crowd so always be paying attention.  There's always that risk of a ball coming into the stands."
