A 10-year-old Mercer Elementary school student who was seriously injured when he fell from a homecoming parade float is out of the hospital and recovering at home.

According to a Facebook post by the father of Nicholas King, the fifth grader was back home on Sunday after spending eleven days in Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh where he underwent surgery.

The boy was seriously injured when he slipped off a float and was run over. 

The community has started a social media campaign to help the family pay medical bills.

A fundraising dinner is will be held at Mercer High School on November 1 from noon until 5 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased at the High School for $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

In addition, “Praying for Nick” shirts are being sold to raise money for the family.

An account has been set up at PNC under the name “Nicholas King Medical Fund.”

A second student was also injured in the parade.

Caden Guiler suffered a leg injury when the nine-year-old jumped from a moving float and slipped on the wet pavement into the path of the trailer wheels. 

He was taken to UPMC in Farrell where he was expected to make a full recovery.
