MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - The Mahoning county dog pound has no more room, it's beyond it's capacity of 50 dogs.

"When you start to get close to 60 dogs and then above that we're putting up folding cages, it becomes really problematic," said Dog Warden Dianne Fry.

The pound has too many Pitt Bull mix, and while many are loving animals, it is a problem for adoptions.

"Because there's a huge stigma around that breed, and people, if they are not puppies a lot of people are afraid to take on an adult dog like that, said Fry.

Right now every available space is full, and the pound says they have a long waiting list of people who want to surrender their animal as soon a space is becomes available.

"We get dogs everyday, it's just a matter of how many we're going to bring in versus how many are going to get adopted and every day we lose that battle, Rick Tunison, Kettle Manager said.

The adoption fee for a dog is a reasonable 135 dollars and that includes a rabies shot, neutering, and a dog license.

"What we're really hoping is to reach out to the community to see if we can get some people in here to adopt a dog," Fry said.

Tunison does stress that animal adoption is a commitment that comes with responsibilities.

On the positive side, the county has committed to building a new, larger, state of the art dog pound in 20-16.
