WARREN, Ohio - Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins has concluded that a sheriff’s deputy was justified when he fatally shot a Southington man at his home this past summer.

A nine page report issued on Tuesday found that deputy Dario Poledica acted in self-defense when he shot Charles Crandall at Crandall’s Phalanx Mills Herner Road on July 14th.

Investigators say deputies became involved when a neighbor called the sheriff after shots were fired at his truck outside Crandall’s home.

When other deputies and police arrived, Deputy Poledica approached the home and called on Crandall to come out.

Deputy Poledica began walking away when another officer yelled that the door of the home had opened and he could see a gun.

Evidence gathered from a police body camera indicates that one of the three other officers on the scene yelled for Crandall to drop the gun five times.

Authorities say that after Crandall fired one or two shots, and Deputies Poledica and Dallas Young returned fire.

Crandall was shot three times.  Deputies say they found him lying on the front porch next to a .22 caliber handgun that had fired one shot.

They also say Crandall had a .22 caliber rifle with two spent cartridges nearby.

As a result of the investigation, the prosecutor says the only crimes committed were those committed by Crandall, and no case will be brought before a grand jury.
