CLEVELAND,Ohio (AP) -  A group seeking a $15 minimum wage from Cleveland employers will begin petitioning this week for the wage for thousands of workers employed in the northeast Ohio city.

The Raise Up Cleveland group hopes to get the city council to approve an ordinance establishing the wage or take the issue directly to voters.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland (http://bit.ly/1Xv32IE ) reports there isn't currently a citywide minimum wage. The state minimum wage is $8.10.

Group member Artheta Peters says home health care workers, daycare providers, fast-food workers and others need the wage to provide for their families.

The proposal calls for setting Cleveland's minimum wage at $15 in January, with increases indexed to inflation beginning in January 2018.

City Councilman Kevin Conwell says he plans to support the proposal.
