LISBON, Ohio - An East Palestine man who just turned 18-years-old last week, has been charged in connection the single car crash the claimed the life of a Crestview High School senior just days before he was to graduate.
Jacob T. Chamberlain was arraigned Tuesday morning in Columbiana County Municipal Court, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of drug possession, possession of drug instruments, operating a vehicle under the influence, improper or expired registration and failure to control his vehicle.
State Troopers say Chamberlain was driving a Chevy Impala along Creek Road in Unity Township at around 12:30 a.m. Friday, when the car went off the road, struck a ditch and a tree, before turning over.
Chamberlain and two passengers, Tyler S. Barnes, 21, and Timothy A. Walton, 18, both of New Waterford, were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
The Highway Patrol says Walton succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
According to a family member, Tyler Barnes remains unconscious in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
Chamberlain, who was the only person in the car wearing a seat belt, sustained moderate injuries.
Troopers say the drug charge against Chamberlain was filed because they found a small amount of marijuana in the car and a glass smoking pipe.
Walton would have graduated this past Sunday.
