NEWTON FALLS, Ohio - Several people are without shelter after a fire at a Newton Falls apartment complex.

Around 10:30 Sunday night, an air conditioning unit on the third floor of the Newton Village Apartments caught fire. The fire then spread to the roof.

Several departments were on scene, including crews from Lordstown, Braceville, Newton Falls and Garrettsville.

Firefighters say everyone was evacuated safely, but one woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Police officers — who were the first ones on scene — helped kick in doors and evacuate some residents.

One of the residents who was affected by the fire said the Red Cross reached out to him to offer help, such as hotel vouchers.

Kristen Gallagher, disaster program specialist for the Red Cross, said approximately 45 units are damaged from the fire.

She said that the Red Cross will make sure the residents needs for food, shelter and comfort are met.

The Red Cross will be returning to the scene this afternoon to speak with residents.
