WARREN, Ohio - The Drug Task Force known as TAG, the Trumbull-Ashtabula Group, has a new commander.
Tony Villanueva served as a detective for the Howland police department for 9 years.
Tony Villanueva was a Captain in the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department.
Now he will head up a multi-county drug unit that has been working everyday to fight the heroin epidemic in Trumbull and Ashtabula counties.
He says he wants to attack the opiate problem from all areas and take a multi-tiered approach.
"We are going to get with every department of this area who are dealing with this, not just law enforcement. The Mental Health Board and Recovery, the area hospitals, the EMT's, the fire departments," said Villanueva.
Villanueva says he will focus on the sellers. "The biggest problem is the dealers. There are so many dealers out there. The low level dealers all the way up to the suppliers and we are going to attack that situation."
He says he wants to get the DEA and the ATF more involved in TAG's investigations. He says they can help on many different levels.
"So when we run into issues with funding and overtime, when we get federal agencies involved, that helps support us a little."
He also says he doesn't just want to arrest the same people over and over. Part of his plan is to make sure people are getting help, not just incarceration.
