It's rare you see a woman in a police uniform in Mercer County and just days from now Kaillie Marshall will be just the second officer sworn into the Sharon Police Department in its history.

"It's like I said I want to protect and serve, it's been in my nature since I was young. Working for Sharon will give me that opportunity to be able to protect and serve the community that I grew up around," said Marshall.

Chief Gerry Smith says there has been a slight increase in the interest from female candidates and adds Sharon's police force is one of the most active in the area.

"We answer almost 30,000 calls a year. It's fast paced, it's fun, the pay is competitive. I think we do more in a year than you'll learn more anywhere else of a department of a comparable size," said Chief Smith.

Kaillie attended the Mercy Hurst Poice Academy up in Erie, she actually had 7 other female cadets in her class. She says her training was no different than anyone else's but says it's now time to apply that training to the streets of Sharon all while inspiring at the same time.

"I hope to bring to the PD a chance to show that females are just as equipped to be police officers as anyone else," added Marshall.

Kaillie will be officially sworn in at a city council meeting on August 17th.
