CHICAGO - Managers of 28 Kmart stores around the country found out on Thursday that their stores are closing as part of a streamlining effort by parent company Sears Holdings.

The five stores in the Mahoning and Shenango Valley's were are not on the list of stores closing later this year.

In announcing second quarter results, Sears Holdings announced that the 28 stores are shutting down as the company continues its shift from brick and mortar stores to digital sales.

Kmart operates stores in Austintown, Niles, East Liverpool, Ohio, as well as Hermitage and New Castle, Pennsylvania.

Stores in Willow Grove and Allentown, Pa are closing, as well as the Massillon Ohio location.

Sears Holdings says the stores will close in mid-November, except for the Kmart in North Miami Beach, Florida, that will close in mid-December

Eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores, according to a statement from the company.

Sears Holdings revenues declined $1.3 billion compared to the second quarter one year ago.

Kmart store sales decreased more than 9% in the three month period. Sales at Sears stores declined more than 13%.
