NESHANNOCK TWP., Lawrence Co. Pa. - Police say a garbage truck driver will be cited for rear-ending an ambulance in Neshannock Township Tuesday.

David Bortmes of Karns City, a driver for Waste Management, will be cited for careless driving.

According to a police report, the Elite EMS Ambulance was stopped in traffic on Route 18 northbound when the garbage truck rear-ended the ambulance. The accident happened around 12:30 pm past Maitland Lane near Aleyna Drive.

The EMT, paramedic, and patient inside the ambulance were taken to UPMC Horizon Shenango Valley in Farrell, according to Elite EMS Ambulance. Noga Ambulance's station was close to the scene of the crash and that ambulance company transported them.

The patient inside the ambulance did not appear to be hurt and was being transported from UPMC Jameson to UPMC Horizon for a diagnostic test, according to an owner and director Glenn Miller. The patient was evaluated in the ER.

The EMT and paramedic were released from the hospital but the EMT is on restriction for a few days to recover.

Bortmes was not injured and the garbage truck was drivable.

Miller expects the ambulance will be a total loss that could cost more than $200,000 to replace with the cost of equipment added into the equation.

He said that the frame and box of the ambulance appear to be twisted and the stretcher bent. The impact of the crash even shattered the passenger's side of the front windshield and collapsed part of the passenger's side roof.

Miller said that their company is part of the Federal EMS Strike Team program that sends ambulances to places in need across the country. They are currently on standby to help with Hurricane Irma and were previously on standby to help during Hurricane Harvey but were not activated. This particular ambulance was scheduled to go if they were called upon to serve but they will have two other vehicles ready to go.
