The death of a former Howland woman that had been investigated as a possible homicide by authorities in Florida has now been ruled a suicide according to media accounts.

YourObsever.com reported this week that the coroner issued the suicide ruling in the death of 54-year-old Lori Martin whose body was found in a sauna on January 23 in Longboat Key, Florida.

The website published the following statement from Police Chief Pete Cummings:

On January 23, 2018, the Longboat Key Police Department, working in partnership with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office began investigating the death of 54-year-old Lori Ann Martin. On April 19, Dr. Russel Vega, ME. officially ruled the death to be an act of suicide. The medical ruling is supported by the independent Police Department investigation.

The statement did not disclose the cause of Martin's death.

Chief Cumming said that his officers responded to the Harbourside Clubhouse of the Longboat Key Moorings around 5 p.m. On January 23. Officials believe Martin had been there for 3-4 hours.

Police initially treated the case as a possible homicide investigation.

According to her obituary said Martin was born in Niles, graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1981 and received a Bachelors degree from Youngstown State University in 1986 where she majored in math and chemistry.
