Two suspects face several charges after leading Hermitage Police on a chase early Saturday morning.
Hermitage Police say they pulled a vehicle over on the Shenango Valley Freeway near South Hermitage Road around 2 a.m.
Police say they stopped the Buick because it had registration tags belonging to a Hyundai. When officers stopped the vehicle, they could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car.
Authorities say when back up officers arrived, the car took off down South Hermitage Road and then onto Morefield Road before it stopped because of a blown tire.
Police say 29-year-old Jerome Smith of Akron and 20-year-old Xandra Storm Lester of Akron got out and ran from the vehicle.
Hermitage Police Chief, Eric Jewell says Lester was arrested after being tased. Two pieces of Alprazolam tablets, a small amount of marijuana and a digital scale were found in her purse.
Smith was arrested after a long search by several police canines.
Officers reportedly found a 9mm pistol and a large knife with built-in metal knuckles in the vehicle. Officers say the pistol was reported stolen out of Parma, Ohio.
According to a police report, a bag of .22 caliber bullets was found by the vehicle.
Lester is facing charges of receiving stolen property, false ID to law enforcement, loitering and prowling at nighttime, possession of a controlled substance, a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and public drunkenness.
Lester is in Mercer County Jail after failing to post a $50,000 bond.
Chief Jewell says while talking to Akron police Saturday night, they found out Smith was arrested earlier in the day on a warrant for aggravated robbery and kidnapping by the U.S. Border Patrol in New York State when he tried to cross into Canada.
Smith is charged with felony receiving stolen property, felony theft of a motor vehicle, felony possession of firearm prohibited (for being a convicted felon in possession of a gun), felony fleeing and eluding police, false ID to law enforcement, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.
