Youngstown State senior quarterback Montgomery VanGorder was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference's Newcomer of the Week the league announced on Sunday.

VanGorder broke three single-game YSU passing records in the 45-38 loss at Western Illinois on Saturday.

For the game, he was 33-of-57 for 418 yards and three touchdowns. He broke the school record for completions (set in 2008), attempts (set in 1968) and yards (set in 1968) in a losing effort. 

He had touchdown passes of 21, 11 and four yards all in the second half against the Leathernecks.

In the first half, he had 83 yards passing on 16 attempts before throwing for 335 yards on 41 attempts in the second half as YSU scored 31 points. He completed passes to 12 different players in the game.

Through four games this year, VanGorder has thrown for 1,011 yards and completed 75-of-129 passing attempts. He has 10 touchdown passes, including three vs. Butler, Valparaiso, and WIU.

WIU quarterback Sean McGuire was named the Offensive Player of the Week, South Dakota's Andrew Gray was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Missouri State's Darius Joseph was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Penguins are at home this Saturday when they play host to Southern Illinois. Kickoff for YSU's annual homecoming game is set for 6 pm.
