YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown branch of the NAACP is pressing the Mahoning County Land Bank for answers after a minority-owned contractor demolished a vacant house by mistake.

The land bank terminated its agreement with the contractor, but the NAACP stated that the demolition was an honest mistake and wants the contractor re-hired.

The contractor being represented by the NAACP said his immediate supervisor told him that the house that got demolished was the right house.

Youngstown chapter president, George Freeman, said the contractor was the only African-American contractor out of 13 that the land bank employed to do demolition work.

Freeman said that supervisor was from the land bank and was there with the contractor at the time the wrong house was torn down. It was also said that they didn't know until after the fact.

Freeman said that since the contractor was bonded and insured, that the land bank should've contacted the insurance agency or the bonding company to file a claim but it never did.

He and other representatives from the Youngstown branch of the NAACP met at the land bank offices this morning; however, the officials were all out of town.

The NAACP stated that the whole thing is simply a misunderstanding and an honest mistake and that the land bank should not terminate its contract with Ware's Demolition.

Freeman told 21 News, "The house was already on the demolition list, it was to be torn down I think the following week, it was to be torn down by another contractor, but there was no loss to anyone"

The land bank's executive director Deb Flora said in a statement that the contract called for Ware's Demolition to tear down a house at 1454 Forestview and "that is not what he demolished".

21 News spoke with Flora on the phone earlier and tried to clarify some questions but she said there was no further comment.

Freeman, meanwhile, said Ware's Demolition was never paid for the demolition of the house.

Freeman stated that he intends to meet with land bank officials to discuss the situation.
