YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mahoning County Sheriff's Deputies say the man at the center of a lockdown on Youngstown State University's campus has been released on bond from the Mahoning County Jail after he was booked on unrelated charges.
Deputies say 19-year-old Robert Allen was booked into the Mahoning County Jail on a warrant for an unrelated charge of Possession of Drugs/Drug Abuse.
Allen was released from jail after he posted a bond for the drug charges.
However, deputies confirmed to 21 News that Allen is the man who turned himself into YSU Police after a search triggered a lockdown.
According to officials on the scene, the search stemmed from a fight Monday morning in which the suspect allegedly threatened someone with a gun at Kilcawley Center, then proceeded to show the weapon.
YSU Police Chief Shawn Varso said during a briefing that the victim was able to get away and call the police. Varso said that the victim was initially uncooperative, but was able to eventually give officers the suspect's name and description.
Varso said they immediately issued the lockdown alert, dispatching every nearby officer to the campus.
Investigators from the Youngstown Police Department, the Youngstown State University Police Department, the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office, as well as several local task forces were involved. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reportedly sent two K9 tracking dogs to the area.
Varso said that officers were able to get in contact with Allen's family members, who were able to get Allen on the phone.
Allen then allegedly offered to go to the YSU Police Department to talk with officers.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. deputies say Allen arrived at the county jail.
Allen has not yet been charged in connection to the lockdown or the alleged altercation at Kilcawley.
Varso says investigators are still reviewing witness statements and looking to see if security video recorded the incident.
It is unknown at this time what charges Allen could potentially be facing.
The Youngstown State University Campus, as well as St. Elizabeth, Ursuline High School, The Youngstown Diocese, the main branch of the Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, and Ohio Living Park Vista, were placed on lockdown while police investigated an incident on campus.
There were no reported injuries of any sort.
A notice from Eastern Gateway said they also contacted the Youngstown Police Department following the alert at YSU. Officials say YPD deployed an officer to the downtown campus.
An alert from EGCC said, "Our security is alerting all faculty and students that we are taking immediate action."
Officials from Mercy Health said St. Elizabeth Hospital was also placed on lockdown. The hospital continued to accept patients in the emergency department with additional security.
The main library at 305 Wick Avenue was also on lockdown.
The Community Health Center on Wick Avenue was also on lockdown, saying patients should not report for their appointments until the situation ends.
In addition, the campus of Ursuline High School on Wick Avenue and the Diocese of Youngstown offices on Wood Street and Ohio Living Park Vista on Fifth Avenue were also on lockdown.
Choffin Career & Technical Center posted to their social media accounts that they were sheltering in place due to the current events at YSU.
