WARREN, Ohio - Jurors in a Trumbull County courtroom will begin hearing Claudia Hoerig's side of the story today as the defense begins presenting its case in her murder trial.

Following a long weekend break, testimony is scheduled to resume at 1 o'clock this afternoon as the 54-year-old woman tries to explain why she admitted fatally shooting her husband in 2007 at their Newton Falls home.

In opening statements, the defense hinted that the jury may hear from Claudia Hoerig herself.

Prosecutors wrapped up their case Friday after spending the week calling medical experts, police investigators, and other witnesses.

The jury also viewed what investigators said amounted to a video confession from Hoerig.

It was one year ago this month that authorities flew to Hoerig's native Brazil and brought her back to Trumbull County to face trial for the murder of Air Force Reserve Major Karl Hoerig.

Prosecutors say Claudia Hoerig fled from the U.S. Following Major Hoerig's death.

It took more than a decade of diplomatic and legal efforts to extradite Claudia Hoerig from Brazil.
