YSU helping Youngstown improve snow removal

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Math experts from YSU are being recruited to help the city of Youngstown update its snow and ice control routes that haven't been updated in the past 30 years.
Since those routes were developed at least 20 roads have been closed and the city's commissioner of buildings and grounds is seeking help to help drivers become more efficient when clearing roads of ice and snow.
Earlier this month crews found it difficult to keep up with 1,100 lane miles on 982 streets.
As many as thirteen crews out working around the clock, the Youngstown Street Department first attacks main roads before beginning work on side streets during heavy snow.
The city will be working with Dr. Thomas Wakefield, Chair of YSU's Mathematics and Statistics Department, who is having students in the Topics of Mathematical Modeling class examine the city routes.
The students will take a look at the city's current snow removal plan during the next semester.
The new routes should be ready by this fall.
