STRUTHERS, Ohio - The Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that 48-year-old Brandon Schmitt was fatally shot by police following a nearly 14-hour standoff in Struthers.

The standoff with police, FBI, and SWAT team members at a Fifth Street home ended after shots were fired and a rifle could be seen falling out of a window at around 7:45 am Wednesday.

Police and FBI say Schmitt assaulted his girlfriend's sixteen-year-old daughter Tuesday evening, striking her in the head with a flashlight.

The standoff began after the girl's mother called the police.  The girl and a 13-year-old boy got out of the home.  The girl was taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible concussion and broken arm.

The FBI and a SWAT team were called after Schmitt refused to come out of the home.

Schmitt, who was reportedly armed with a .22  caliber rifle and ammunition, refused to come out of the home even after authorities used pepper gas and stun grenades.

Although he stopped communicating with police at around 1:30 am Wednesday, using a thermal imaging camera, authorities managed to determine that the man had moved to the third floor of the home.

Police Cheif Tim Roddy told 21 News that Schmitt fired a shot while they were in the home. The FBI says an officer shot Schmitt because he posed a lethal threat.

Fifth Street was closed in the area of Elm Street as the FBI gathers more information from the police.

Struthers Schools were delayed for two hours because of the standoff.
