Ohio lawmakers aim to end school takeovers
House Bill 70 would give local control to the districts and failing school districts would be required to have support services like health services and after-school programs.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Two Ohio state representatives introduced a bill today to end state takeovers of local schools.
According to our print partner The Vindicator, the bill is a bipartisian effort with State reps. Don Jones, R-95th, and Joe Miller, D-56th, at the forefront of the legislation.
The Youngstown City School District is currently under state control along with East Cleveland and Lorain. 10 other districts could become state controlled in the near future.
House Bill 70 would give local control to the districts and failing school districts would be required to have support services like health services and after-school programs.
According to a release from Rep. Miller, "the Academic Distress Commission has been unable to work effectively alongside the district’s teachers, school leaders and community at large. After three years, we haven’t seen any evidence that state takeovers improve academic achievement."
