Community leaders were joined by citizens in the Mahoning County Courthouse Rotunda Friday to raise awareness to protect one of the most vulnerable populations.

They came together in support of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

"We see a large number of our seniors that are in this terrible plight, yearly over five million seniors around the world are abused, and 2.6 billion are often taken from their funds," Krishmu Shipmon, Administrator for the Mahoning County Adult Protective Service, said.

Organizers said that if you or someone you know is being abused or neglected, you should call adult protective services within the county department of job and family services. Callers can remain anonymous.
