A raccoon located in Boardman Township has tested positive for rabies.

According to the release, the Ohio Department of Health tested the raccoon following an incident involving two dogs and their owner.

The release says the dogs were not up to date on their rabies vaccines but received boosters after the incident.

The dogs will be quarantined for 180 days because they were not up to date on their rabies vaccine.

Mahoning County Public Health says that residents can protect themselves from rabies by keeping their pets up to date on vaccines, avoid contact with stray animals, wash animal bites and follow up with a physician and report any bite incidents.
