YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Hazmat crews and Youngstown firefighters were called out to Ward Beecher Hall on the Youngstown State University campus Tuesday morning after an air compressor in the basement blew up.

It all started around 7 a.m. when a fire alarm went off. The hazmat crew was sent out as a precaution, and YSU's Public Information Officer Ron Cole initially said they were investigating it as a possible chemical incident.

According to officials on the scene, a maintenance man reported seeing a light haze of smoke overnight.

Youngstown Fire Chief Barry Finley says they investigated and found that the compressor had blown. He says it created a lot of smoke, which set the alarm off.

"The problem is we didn't know that in the beginning, so we had to take every single precaution," Finley said. "We weren't sure what it was, so we took every precaution. That's why we called the hazmat team, and they went in to check the building for any chemical release or anything like that. There was nothing."

A Penguin Alert sent just after 10:30 a.m. says Ward Beecher will reopen at 11:30 a.m. with classes resuming regular schedules at noon.

The remainder of the university is open.
