Two years ago, the Mathews football team finished the regular season 6-4 and went to the playoffs.

Now the program is in a "week by week" status whether they play an 11 man or eight-man game due to injuries.

At the request of Ashtabula St. John, who ironically went to the playoffs in 2018, the Mustangs played an eight-man game in their opener.

Since then, they lost four straight before playing Windham last Friday in an eight-man game.

According to Athletic Director Mike Palumbo, the team should get five players back this week, which brings them to 17.

Palumbo hopes they can finish the season with normal games.

Lutheran East, a Division V program and in a playoff position, and the Mustangs week nine opponent didn't want to take any chances of not playing a normal game and has since found another opponent.

Palumbo says they'll play their week one opponent, Ashtabula St. John, in an eight-man game instead.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association does not recognize Eight-man football. Still, a spokesman said for programs in situations like Mathews; they'd rather see them play an eight-man game, rather than not playing at all.
