Penguins drop three-setter to Wright State
Aleah Hughes posted a match-high 13 kills and added 13 digs as an injury-ridden Youngstown State volleyball team dropped a three-setter to Wright State on Friday evening. The set scores were 25-17, 25-11, 25-17.
Hughes carried a huge load for the Penguins as the only opening-day pin hitter in the lineup at a normal position. She had 13 kills and just five errors on 46 attempts, which was more than 40 percent of YSU's total attacks. Valor Haggerty had five kills and a team-best two blocks, and Margaux Thompson posted 13 digs.
Thompson was recognized before the match for reaching 1,000 career digs earlier this month.
The Penguins were without setter Alexia Byrnes as well as pin hitters Brooklen Pe'a, Alyssa Oswald and Ellie Cox. Alexis Hughes made her collegiate debut in the match and finished with four digs. Morgan Cleevely, a 5-foot-6 defensive specialist, played several rotations in the front row.
Wright State, which would clinch at least a share of the Horizon League regular-season title with another win on Saturday, improved to 23-4 overall and 12-3 in conference play. Nyssa Baker had 11 kills without an error in 13 attempts, and Teddie Sauer matched her with 11 kills. Jenna Story contributed a match-best 22 digs.
Youngstown State will conclude the 2019 season on Saturday as it hosts Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m.
