Congregation surprises pastor at Union Baptist Church

YOUNGSTOWN - As churches across the Valley remain closed to due the coronavirus, it's been difficult for pastors and members of the church to connect. At Union Baptist Church on Lincoln Avenue in Youngstown, the congregation came together Sunday morning to show support for their pastor.
Pastor Michael Harrison has been preaching to an empty church every Sunday since the pandemic started. With only essential staff in the church to hear his sermon, he's been missing the interaction with his congregation. After his sermon, Harrison stepped outside, much to his surprise, to a street full of cars driving by, beeping, and showing support for their pastor.
An emotional Harrison says the amount of appreciation he has for a moment like this can't be put into words.
"I love my people. There's nothing I won't do for them," he said. "For them to show up like they did today, has meant the world to me. I will never forget this day as long as I live."
Sylvia Harrison, Pastor Harrison's wife, a Union Baptist Church first lady, didn't know about the surprise either and said this is just what everyone needed.
"It's just an honor," she said. "I just want to say thank you to everyone. They know I'm a crybaby; I was crying. Just to see the faces, you know, just to wave, it just made my day. Thank you."
The cars circled the church twice before pulling away. Over 30 vehicles surprised Pastor Harrison.
