Giant Eagle recalls onion products over contamination concern

PITTSBURGH - Giant Eagle is recalling some onions and some products containing onions due to a nationwide Salmonella contamination.
The grocery store chain announced that bulked or bagged Spanish, White, and Red Onions purchased since June 6 are being recalled. (see list below)
In addition, prepared foods and deli items made with onions purchased since July 25 may also be contaminated with Salmonella.
Customers still in possession of the affected product should dispose of it. Customers may also bring in the receipt to their local Giant Eagle or Market District location to receive a refund on their purchase of the impacted product.
The recall is part of a nationwide onion recall, the result of contamination that has sickened 396 people, seven of whom are in Ohio.
The seven cases recorded in Ohio include people ranging in age from 16 to 69 in Franklin, Hamilton, Licking, Ross, and Williams counties. Two of the people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been recorded.
