Youngstown Schools begin Tuesday

YOUNGSTOWN -
On Tuesday, Youngstown City Schools head back to the virtual classroom. The district has chosen to remain on-line for, at least, the start of this school year.
The district wanted to ensure every student and household had the devices they need and access to the internet. This process pushed back the start of their school year by slightly more than a week, and at this point, still, not everyone has picked up what they need to begin the year.
Another device pick-up day has been scheduled for Wednesday.
Pick-up times will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the schools.
"If they don't, we're going to have to do some hand delivering, some social distancing hand delivering," said CEO Justin Jennings.
Jennings said every student's home has been set up with internet access or a mobile hotspot. The district now, though, is working on getting enough hotspots for each student.
"If you have a family who has three (students), one hotspot is not going to work. We basically want to get it to a point where everybody kind of has their own. We haven't gotten there yet because of the demand and the supply," said Jennings.
And when asked when the district might return to the physical classroom, Jennings said that decision would come when there is a steady decline in case numbers.
"It's really, really tough because we know at the end of the day the best way to educate our kids is to be physically in front of them, but right now, it's not the healthiest way," said Jennings. "I'd rather air on the side of caution and be wrong in this case, than to air on the other side and be wrong because that could mean lives, that could mean fatalities, that could mean more sickness."
